By now, a lot of you have met our friend Amy Elliot Bragg; she’s a pretty awesome gal. An amateur historian, she’s spent the last couple years regaling us with stories of Detroit’s early years on her blog, Night Train to Detroit. Her style is freewheeling, joyful and even a bit mischievous, as evidenced by her book Hidden History of Detroit. It’s the most fun you’re going to have reading about Detroit’s frontier days, hands down.

In person, she’s pretty much the same way. She’s been leading our “Frontier Anarchy” tour for a couple months now, and it’s a blast. She guides us around the city, plays history bingo, shows some old-timey Detroit landmarks and tells stories about the early days of the city: forgotten gamblers who loved bad jokes, Civil War heroes falling down drunk in the streets and endless griping about the mud. The tours usually looked a lot like this:

That’s her on the right. She’s pretty awesome.

We’ve had so much fun, we’re working with Amy to design “Frontier Anarchy 2.0: Go West!” We’ll still be focusing on Detroit’s early days but, while our first side focused exclusively on east side landmarks, we’ll be jumping across Woodward Avenue to explore the forgotten stories of our dear city’s west side. We’re not yet ready to spill the beans on exactly where we’re headed, but rest assured that there will be more outrageous stories, a handful of familiar sites with wildly unfamiliar backstories and a bit of boozing. We’ll kick off the event on March 30th, but you can get your tickets here!

2012 was the year of the bus. We learned how to get a bus company off the ground with very little. We learned what it takes to make a reliable schedule, to offer proper customer service and how to change a water pump on a bus in under 20 minutes in the parking lot. We learned that there’s a concentrated excitement around and about Detroit’s revival – more than we could have ever imagined. Most of all, we learned that there’s a massive need to get around quickly and safely.

2013 won’t be the year of the bus. We’ve got that part figured out; the nuts and bolts and steel part. Instead, 2013 will be the year of the regional transit. We’re reaching out further than ever before and making bold plans to get folks moved to exactly where they want to go right when they want to get there. As downtown and its surrounding neighborhoods surge and swell, the issue of transit gets more and more crucial each day. Killer solutions like M1 Light Rail and Bus Rapid Transit are indeed on the way, but even once those are in place in a handful of years that’ll only serve a small portion of the total current and huge future demand.

So we’re retooling. It’s always been our mission and our dream to tackle Detroit’s largest transit problems, but we had to start somewhere simpler. We set our sights on the nightlife market at the start because it was a problem we could wrap our arms around just twice a week. We worked extremely hard to find what worked and what didn’t — and, eventually, a really rad, usable service emerged that moved hundreds each month. But we can’t do it all. We’re still a small company and, even after our explosive first year of growth and new friends, we still believe it’s very important to do fewer things really, really well.

With that, we’re ending our Friday and Saturday night public bar service for now. Instead, we’re doing a monthly bar crawl between Downtown, Midtown and Corktown every last Saturday of the month. It’ll be just $10, the loop will be under 20 minutes and we’ll throw a bunch of buses on it so the wait times will be almost zero. Details on that new crawl are right here and it starts this January 26th. Groupon and LivingSocial passes will be honored in full on this new crawl.

In its place, we’ve launched a handful of really exciting initiatives that we hope will totally change what you thought possible with public transit:

First up, Take Back the Commute. So much of our time these days is spent driving into and back from work; sometimes upwards of an hour. With more and more of us working downtown, our system of freeways and major roads have reached a breaking point long ago. We want to give you back that time and get you right from your neighborhood to the front door of your office in one shot. We’re working with a number of companies in the Downtown and Midtown communities to make this a reality very soon.

Next, The West Side Connection. The communities of Plymouth, Canton and Northville have opted out of public transit. While this doesn’t affect the majority of people in that region, there’s a great number of good people there that’re completely stranded because of disability or financial strain. We’re working on one of the nation’s first subscription-based transit system to fill these gaps.

Finally, HAMDOT. Hamtramck is bursting at the seams with new life and new residents but getting there is tough with a car and impossible without one. We’re working on a free 7-day-a-week shuttle bus that’ll run between Hamtramck, New Center, Midtown and Downtown to get Hamtramck to work and Detroit to fun times. This is an ambitious plan, certainly, but so is this feisty little historic ‘burg.

Head over to our Public Services page to learn more about these initiatives and take a survey if you’re interested in riding on one of one of these fresh new projects.

Also, we have a great deal of really incredible tours and special events planned for the next two months that’ll get you to more unique places, more rare experiences and more new people than ever before. The list of those is right here.

Detroit 2013 will be worth the wait.

This weekend’s essentials for the Detroit Bus Company bar-hopping service

Greetings, Detroit revellers.

Just a reminder that we’re on target for another attack on the downtown bar scene. Get your party shoes on and head for the bus because this weekend we have a very special new feature: a brand-spanking new sound system, being installed today, fresh off the docks.

And a quick but important note: The Suburban Express bus is offline this weekend as it gets its heart fixed — the all-important diesel injectors need cleaning. It’s worth it not only because it means the engine will continue working, but also it drastically reduces smelly exhaust fumes, and we’re here to help reduce traffic and emissions, not increase them.

A few events for motivation:

B Williams Experiment at Motor City Wine (upstairs of Foran’s), tonight from 10 till 11:30. Live jazz mixed with wine and a great crowd. A very pleasant way to kick off the weekend.

DJ Mike ‘Agent X’ Clark 10pm at Northern Lights Lounge. Also a very pleasant way to kick off the weekend, but with a bit more bump.

The Concert of Colors is taking place at various Midtown venues this weekend, including a wide variety of tasteful musical performances.

Third Annual Bastille Day Festivities on the Mound: Saturday at 7PM. You can visit “Ze Mound” on Atwater at the riverfront for a picnic and cake-cutting to celebrate France’s National Day. Guests are encouraged to bring goodies. This sounds very cool. You can hoof it from our stop at Foran’s, and then hop back on the bus in the afterglow of French nationalism, head to some bars and feel some more joie de vivre. Come on, city dwellers, it’s not that far!

Also, we have updated the site to reflect some of our new stops and answer some of the questions we’ve received about how our service works. Share with your friends, bring more people to the party so we can have the coolest city party bus in the nation! No other city has this. Let’s make it killer and represent!

As always, don’t forget our awesome tracker that shows you where the bus is during hours of service. Look for the live link to go up just before 6PM Friday and Saturday so you know in which direction to stumble:

http://www.thedetroitbus.com.

And there’s also the phone number: (313) 444-BUS1 (2871) that gets you a live person on the bus who can help you find out where to get picked up, answer service questions, and generally make your party life way slicker.

Have a great weekend, friends!

– Andy and Gary
