The Detroit Bus Company Relocates to Hamtramck, Launches Eight & Sand
Press Release – October 4th, 2013 – 3901 Christopher, Hamtramck, MI
As of October 1st, 2013, The Detroit Bus Company has moved all of its operations from its previous office in downtown Detroit and a depot in Ferndale to a historic factory in the southeastern corner of Hamtramck.
Launched in 2012 to tackle transit issues in the City of Detroit, the DBC primarily serves local area youth through their Youth Transit Alliance program funded by The Skillman Foundation. They also offer charter services to local area companies and produce their own line of informative tours on subjects like pre-automotive Detroit history, historic Detroit bars, local architecture, food systems and a host of other topics. Andy Didorosi, the founder and president of The Detroit Bus Company, says, “We’ve always wanted to be in Detroit where our work and heart is – Hamtramck already feels like home. We firmly believe companies that want to improve Detroit should put their money where their mouth is and move down here.”
To demonstrate a commitment to local development, DBC has launched a business complex called Eight & Sand. Named after a term used in the 19th century to wish a steam locomotive engineer a safe journey, the 90,000 sq/ft facility will be available shortly for businesses to expand to one of its many large spaces. Built in 1920 by The Gear Grinding Company, the factory floor was once home to leviathan machine tools, heat treatment furnaces, welding rigs and huge cranes. Purchased in 1940 by the Dana Corporation, they produced the first constant velocity joints under its iconic sawtooth roof through their Con-Vel brand. Most recently, the factory was used as a plastics trading and storage warehouse. The DBC is beginning renovations immediately to restore the original character and architectural features hidden over the years.
The primary anchor tenant is Fowling Warehouse that is relocating from Detroit’s east side. Fowling, a sport invented at the Indy 500 by a group of Detroiters headed by Chris “Chutt” Hutt, is most easily described as bowling with a football in a competitive two-on-two arrangement. After much success at their first location near City Airport, the new Fowling Warehouse is nearly twice the size and will feature a full service bar, stage, beer garden and over 20 lanes of fowling. Chris, president of Fowling Warehouse, LLC, said, “I couldn’t be happier to be realizing my dream of opening a full service fowling warehouse right here in Detroit for all the dedicated fowlers and the chance to expose this great game to a whole new group of fans.” Information about the Fowling Warehouse can be found on their Facebook page.
Located next to the Fowling Warehouse space will be a heated indoor food truck park and commissary capable of hosting and servicing seven full size trucks and their patrons. Featuring communal dining tables, the space will be open to the public starting in 2014.
Another tenant, Reclaim Detroit, a subsidiary of EcoWORKS Detroit, has a space they use to reprocess deconstructed homes into organized building materials. These materials have been used to construct such high profile projects as the Great Lakes Coffee Roasting Company coffee bar located on Woodward Ave. in Midtown. Other tenants include Quizzo Detroit and Pot & Box Detroit.
Eight & Sand is also offering one large industrial space to an innovative entrepreneur of their choosing who is working actively to solve a civic issue in the City of Detroit. The first grantee of this space is Charlie Molnar of Sit On It Detroit, LLC who builds bus benches out of reclaimed wood and installs them at the 2,500+ bus stops throughout Detroit that don’t have functioning benches. They’ve installed 12 benches so far and just received a grant to construct 100 more.
Other amenities include a community workshop for use by building tenants, a 4,000 sq/ft industrial event space managed by Lisa Waud of Pot & Box and 5+ acres of secure parking.
