The Detroit Bus Company Announces Launch of ‘Youth Transit Alliance’

Crowdsourced transit pilot program will begin service to Southwest Detroit & Chadsey-Condon neighborhoods July 1st.

With generous support from the Skillman Foundation, the Detroit Bus Company is launching an unprecedented, neighborhood-led transportation service for Detroit’s children. In July, the Youth Transit Alliance pilot program will begin offering zero-cost rides to students in Southwest Detroit and Chadsey-Condon between their schools, after-school activities and homes. The program combines custom-designed, interactive planning software with a deep collaboration with the neighborhoods’ existing youth service experts to create a groundbreaking transportation service. Its entirely new, and we’re calling it crowdsourced transit.

Unlike traditional transit planning, Youth Transit Alliance will rely on its participants to help plan daily transportation routes. To this end, the Detroit Bus Company saw the need to innovate, developing a custom online transit planning interface from scratch. Program leaders will be able to identify pick-up and drop-off locations, which will be incorporated into daily, customized routes by Detroit Bus Company employees. By collaborating with community leaders and after-school programs across the target areas, the Youth Transit Alliance will ensure safe, reliable transportation to after-school activities on an unprecedented level.

“The Youth Transit Alliance is the natural progression of our company’s work to create innovative transit solutions in Detroit.” says Detroit Bus Company founder Andy Didorosi. “But that doesn’t mean it’s been an easy path. It’s taken both our own hard work, as well as transformative partnerships with organizations like Congress of Communities and Partnership For Youth to bring this into reality.”

Youth Transit Alliance will begin servicing Southwest Detroit & Chadsey-Condon on July 1st.
