Description
Detroit is a melting pot of people and their cultures. A major attribute of people’s culture is their religion–how they worship. On our Sacred Spaces tour, we will visit several houses of worship that have made their mark on our great city. From Detroit’s oldest church to churches that helped runaway slaves find their way to freedom in Canada you’ll experience a range of religious expressions and see how that have made our city and its people what it is today.
Stop 1: Second Baptist Church
I know I’ve walked by this church a hundred times and have always wondered what’s inside. Located in Greektown, this giant beauty was founded in 1836 by 13 former slaves! You’ll learn all about its history as part of the underground railroad, the Gothic Revival architectural style and its role in shaping the neighborhood. Way cool place.
Stop 2: Jefferson Avenue Presbyterian
Another towering, gorgeous wonder from another age. This church was organized back in 1854, features Gothic Revival architecture and took four years to build. We’ve got permission to wander about its many halls and passages that make this a very special place of worship indeed. Also, since Presbyterianism is decidedly American/patriotic it features all kinds of cool America! stuff throughout the structure.
Stop 3: St. Anne Roman Catholic Church
The grande finale! St. Anne was founded in 1701 just TWO DAYS after Detroit was founded. Basically some folks got off a boat, walked over to the site and said, “Church goes here.” It’s the second oldest continuously operating Roman Catholic parish in the whole United States. There’s a reason why it’s often called “The Mother Church of Detroit.” You can’t miss this!
